Agentic AI for Documentation: What We Can Automate Today (and What We Shouldn’t)

With OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, the world was set on a path of artificial intelligence that began reshaping how we work. What was once a futuristic concept is now a daily reality. AI can generate text, summarize information, answer questions, and even create images. In technical writing, this means drafts can be accelerated, research can be quickly compiled, and repetitive tasks can be offloaded, but it also raises a big question: how much should we allow AI to touch our work?

Riding on the coattails of this AI boom, agentic AI began gaining serious attention in 2025. Unlike traditional AI, which waits for explicit instructions, agentic AI can take initiative, perform sequences of actions, and make certain decisions with minimal human oversight. The idea is to let the AI do the legwork on tasks that are structured yet tedious, freeing humans to focus on higher-level thinking and creative problem-solving. But as promising as it sounds, agentic AI also brings ethical and practical considerations, especially in technical writing, where accuracy, clarity, and context are paramount.

How does agentic AI work?

Agentic AI is a step ahead of traditional AI tools due to its autonomy. It can take action, make decisions, and keep working toward a goal on its own. To understand how it works, it helps to look at the steps it follows when completing a task. Agentic AI works by combining three abilities that older AI systems didn’t have: understanding goals, taking action, and adjusting its behavior as it progresses.

When you ask it to do something, it begins by figuring out what you actually want to achieve. It looks at the final outcome you’re asking for, the tools it has access to, and any limits or rules you’ve set. This helps it form a clear picture of the task before it even begins.

Following a few best practices can help teams get the benefits of automation while avoiding mistakes that could hurt accuracy, safety, or user trust.

This ensures accuracy, tone, and context are correct, and prevents cascading errors if the AI misinterprets something. Treat the agent as a helper, not a decision-maker.
