“Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.”

Oprah Winfrey

The brand was founded in 2022 as Zaycodes, a technical writing and open source brand focused on creating technical content and promoting open source contributions. At the end of that year, our founder Zainab Daodu, published Dev Retro 2022: A year of Transformation which included the highlights of the year and our plans for 2023.

At the time, we didn’t know what we were capable of, but with her leadership, we realized that we had the potential to grow and expand the brand. We ended 2023 with plans of rebranding from Zaycodes to WriteTech Hub, we drew up a plan and worked towards it. We are now a team of 8 and growing.

2024 became our new beginning and a journey of positive change, learning, and growth for WriteTech Hub. This article is a look back at the milestones that defined our year.

Highlights of 2024

Here are the achievements that made our year different;

Rebranding from Zaycodes to WriteTech Hub

2024 was indeed a year of new beginnings for us, as it began with the rebranding. This wasn’t just about choosing a new name, it was about redefining who we are and what we stand for.

WriteTech Hub was founded out of the need for an identity that truly reflects our mission to empower businesses and individuals by crafting clear, concise, and captivating technical content that resonates with a wide range of audiences.

In just our first year, WriteTech Hub has grown to a team of 8  individuals. Together, we’ve built an audience of over 3,000 followers across LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram, and a community of 300+ active members.

Our Technical Writing Community

We didn’t want our work to end with just training people, we wanted to make a lasting impact and build a network of technical writers. That’s what inspired us to create our community, a space where members could grow, connect, and support one another.

Having this community makes it easier for us to stay connected and track everyone’s progress. To keep their morale high, we organise weekly activities and also share job opportunities and resources. Today, our community is home to over 300 members.

WriteTech Bootcamp Cohort 3

A major highlight of 2024 was the success of the third cohort of our WriteTech Bootcamp. In 2023, we launched our WriteTech bootcamp and held 2 cohorts, providing aspiring technical writers with the skills and support needed to learn more about the field.

For this cohort, we partnered with TalentPoel, Beacamp, Wiicreate, and Puplar and this was the first cohort with partners. The bootcamp spanned 5 weeks with teachings and assessments from our incredible facilitators: Ejiro Onose, Fortune Ikechi, Divine Orji, and Funke Olasupo. We graduated 29 participants, these participants went home with certificates, and the top participants got amazing gifts from our partners.

The testimonials from participants have been nothing short of inspiring, and we can’t wait to see how our alumni contribute to the technical writing space.

Here’s a recap of the bootcamp.

WriteTech DocReview

The DocReview was designed to enhance the quality of technical documentation while bringing people together to learn and contribute.

We officially kicked off this series on the 10th of September. Our interested community members selected the documentation that they wanted to work on from our curated list of projects, their contributions were reviewed, and they were given feedback.

E-book Launch

We launched our first e-book, Getting Started with Technical Writing. This e-book serves as a guide for all technical writing enthusiasts and covers a lot of technical writing concepts.

This e-book has received positive feedback, and we’re excited to see how it empowers readers on their technical writing journey.

Growing our Reach – Partnerships, Technical Writing Webinar, Monthly X Spaces

This year marked some of our most successful events and partnerships yet.

Partnerships

We collaborated with organisations such as TalentPoel, Beacamp, Wiicreate, Puplar, Untitled Designers Community, Propel, Chimoney, and Mautic Community for some of the activities that were carried out in the year.

  • TalentPoel, Beacamp, Wiicreate, and Puplar were our partners during the WriteTech Bootcamp. They offered their services and resources to make the bootcamp worthwhile.
  • We collaborated with the Untitled Designers Community as their community partner during the UDC Conference.
  • Hacktoberfest 2024 was a blast! We partnered with Chimoney to champion quality open source contributions. Community members tackled open source documentation issues and scored some fantastic prizes along the way. On top of that, we teamed up with the Mautic Community.
  • That’s not all—our partnership with Propel on the Propel Learning Initiative provided our community with hands-on learning opportunities and top-notch resources.

These partnerships allowed us to create enriching experiences for our community.

Technical Writing Webinar

We hosted an interactive session featuring industry experts: Emmy Steven and Michael David, who shared ways on how to start contributing to open source as a technical writer.

Monthly X Spaces

Our X Spaces discussions became a platform for real-time engagement with our audience on topics covering how to land a technical writing job, how AI is transforming the technical writing space, SEO in technical writing, how to improve documentation, the future of technical writing in web3, etc.

Our facilitators delivered their jobs perfectly and answered questions from the audience.

Monthly Newsletters

One way we expanded our reach was by publishing monthly newsletters to engage our audience with highlights from the previous month, what to expect in the upcoming month, job opportunities, updates about our community, and much more.

Initially, we used MailPoet but later migrated to Substack. If you haven’t subscribed yet, feel free to do so. We now have a little over 100 subscribers on Substack.

Plans for 2025

In 2025, we’re looking forward to doubling our impact, reach, and presence. We aim to expand our initiatives, deepen partnerships, and connect with more clients and community members. Among other activities planned for the year, we will organise the fourth cohort of the WriteTech BootCamp and the second edition of our DocReview series.

Final Notes

This year wasn’t just about hard work, it was also about celebrating progress. Every blog post published, every event hosted, and every feedback we received reminded us why we do what we do.

To everyone who has been part of our journey this year—thank you. Whether you joined an event, read our content, or shared your expertise during our events, you’ve helped make 2024 amazing.

Happy New Year from all of us at WriteTech Hub!
