For the past two decades, searching for information has meant one thing: Google.
What started as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in the late 1990s has grown into a system that processes billions of queries daily and sits at the center of how the internet works. Today, that influence is reflected in the scale of the company itself, now valued at over $2.5 trillion.
It became so dominant that “Google it” slowly replaced “look it up”, shaping how we traverse the internet. So when AI tools like ChatGPT started gaining traction, it felt like a turning point. The assumption was almost immediate that this might finally disrupt traditional search.
But if you look at the numbers, that hasn’t quite happened in the way people expected.

Google is still processing over ten billion searches daily, and most people using AI tools haven’t stopped using search engines. If anything, they’re using both. On the surface, not much has changed.
And yet, it doesn’t feel that way.
Something about the experience of finding information has definitely changed. People aren’t just searching keywords anymore; they’re asking questions. They expect clearer answers, faster responses, and less back-and-forth.
Instead of opening multiple tabs and piecing things together, you ask a question and get a response that already does the work for you. It changes what “search” even means. And as that expectation has changed, the way we think about visibility starts to change, too.
This is where the conversation begins to move beyond traditional Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and toward Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). Because in a space where answers are assembled for the user, being discoverable is more than just about showing up on a results page. It’s also about whether your content is part of the answer at all.

For most of the internet’s history, searching for information has been influenced by traditional Search Engine Optimization (SEO). In simple terms, SEO is the practice of making content easier for search engines to find, understand, and rank.
In documentation, this usually means writing so that content appears when someone searches on platforms like Google.
Traditional SEO follows a simple flow: a user has a question, types it into a search bar, scans through a list of results, and clicks the page that seems most relevant. The goal of the content is to earn that click. Because of this, documentation teams spend time optimizing around a few consistent patterns.
They choose keywords that match what users are likely to type. They structure pages with clear headings so search engines can understand the hierarchy of information. They use internal links to connect related topics. And they write titles and metadata that make pages easier to discover.
Over time, this has also shaped how documentation itself is written. Even technical content is often structured not just to explain something clearly, but to match how people search for it. So you start seeing familiar formats like “How to set up X”. “Getting started with Y” or “Troubleshooting Z”.
But there is an assumption underneath all of this. Traditional SEO is built on the idea that the user will always arrive at your page. That they will click, read, scroll, and extract the answer themselves. In this model, the page is the destination. And for a long time, that worked well.
But that assumption is starting to break down as the process of search itself is changing. Most users no longer want lists of links and expect direct answers instead. We’ll go deeper into this as the article progresses.

What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
If traditional SEO is about making content easy for search engines to find, Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is about making content easy for AI systems to understand, extract, and use in their responses.
This is important because the way people find information is no longer limited to search engines. Increasingly, they are asking questions directly to AI systems like ChatGPT or using tools such as Perplexity AI. Instead of showing a list of links, these systems generate a single, structured answer by pulling from multiple sources. In that process, your documentation may not be visited at all, but it can still be used. That is the core idea behind GEO.
It is worth noting, though, that this has an implication for content teams. If AI systems use your documentation without sending traffic to your site, the metrics you use to justify that content may no longer tell the full story. That is a challenge the field is still working through.
Unlike traditional SEO, where success is measured by clicks and rankings, GEO is about visibility inside synthesized responses. Your content is not competing for position on a page. It is competing to be part of the explanation itself.
So instead of asking, “How do I rank this page?” GEO asks a different question: “How easily can this content be understood and reused in an answer?”
This is where documentation becomes especially interesting. Because documentation is already structured, factual, and instructional, it is naturally suited for generative systems. But that does not automatically mean it is optimized for them.
A page can be well-written for humans and still be difficult for AI systems to extract clean answers from. And this is where the gap between SEO and GEO begins to appear more clearly.
Core differences between GEO and Traditional SEO

Understanding the relationship between GEO and traditional SEO requires more than a surface-level comparison. The two approaches share a common foundation. Both reward well-structured, clearly written content, but they diverge significantly in what they optimise for, how they measure success, and what they demand from documentation teams. Examining them across five dimensions makes that distinction concrete.
It is also worth being upfront that GEO is a young field. Much of the research is preliminary, or based on controlled experiments that may not translate directly to real-world documentation practice. Where specific figures are cited below, the source type is noted so you can weigh the evidence accordingly.
Dimension 1: Content structure
Both traditional SEO and GEO reward well-structured content with clear headings, but they diverge in how granular that structure needs to be.
Traditional SEO treats the page as the unit that gets indexed, ranked, and visited. GEO moves that down to the section level, because AI systems don’t always retrieve an entire page. They pull passages, sometimes just a subheading and the paragraphs beneath it, and stitch those pieces into a response. Whatever surrounds that section on the original page isn’t always carried along.
A section that opens with “As mentioned above…” or “Following the previous step…” worked fine when it was assumed people were reading top to bottom. In a generative context, there is no “above”.
The fix is simpler than it sounds. When drafting or reviewing a section, ask yourself, if someone read here first, would this still make sense? That question tends to surface the gaps quickly.
Dimension 2: Language
Traditional SEO is built around keyword alignment. Documentation teams identify the terms their users are likely to search, structure content to include those terms in titles, headings, and body copy, and measure performance through ranking positions and click-through rates. This remains a valid and necessary practice.
GEO moves the emphasis from keyword density to comprehension. AI systems do not match queries to keywords; they interpret the intent behind a question and retrieve content that most directly and completely answers it.
The landmark 2024 study by Aggarwal et al. from Princeton and other institutions introduced the term ‘GEO’ and found that keyword stuffing, one of the most widely used traditional SEO techniques, offers little to no improvement in generative engine visibility. By contrast, fluency optimisation and clear, natural language resulted in a visibility boost of 15 to 30 per cent in their research.
The practical implication for documentation is significant. A page that has been optimised around the keyword “API authentication methods” may rank well in traditional search but be systematically overlooked by an AI system if the content does not directly and clearly answer the question a developer is actually asking. Phrasing headings as explicit questions like “How do I authenticate an API request?” rather than “API Authentication Methods” and leading each section with a direct answer serves both channels simultaneously, satisfying keyword alignment for crawlers and intent comprehension for generative retrieval.
Dimension 3: Freshness
Search engines have long used modification dates as a ranking input. A documentation page updated recently is more likely to reflect current software behaviour than one last touched three years ago, and search algorithms treat that recency as a reasonable proxy for reliability. For documentation teams, this has made regular content audits and update cycles a standard part of search optimisation.
The relationship between freshness and generative retrieval is less direct, but the stakes are considerably higher. AI systems do not check timestamps when retrieving content. What they do, during the generation step, is synthesise information from multiple retrieved sources simultaneously, and when those sources conflict, the model must resolve the contradiction somehow. Documentation that states a parameter accepts three values, while other widely cited sources say four, does not simply rank lower. It actively contaminates the answer the model produces, which is then delivered to the developer as a synthesised fact, with no ranked list of alternatives for them to consult.
This raises the consequences of outdated documentation to a different order of magnitude. In traditional search, a stale page loses ranking position. In a generative context, a stale page causes AI systems to generate incorrect answers at scale to users who may never visit the source to verify what they have been told and who have no reason to doubt a response presented to them as a direct answer.
It varies across different AI systems, but the risk is serious enough to take seriously: accuracy and consistency across your documentation matter more now, not less.
Dimension 4: Authority Signals
In traditional SEO, authority is measured primarily through backlinks. The volume and quality of external sites referencing a piece of content contribute directly to its domain and page authority, which in turn influence how prominently it ranks in search results. This model has governed search engine optimisation for over two decades and remains a central pillar of traditional SEO strategy.
GEO works differently. The foundational 2024 Aggarwal et al. study found that content grounding its claims in citations from authoritative external sources and verifiable statistics performed notably better in generative engine responses. The intuition is that a generative system has to decide what to trust, and content that points to named, verifiable sources gives it something to work with.
Backlinks still matter indirectly. Google’s AI Overviews, for instance, likely factors in domain authority signals that backlinks influence. But for tools like Perplexity and ChatGPT, the more relevant question is whether your content is part of the broader conversation in your space. Is it referenced in developer forums? Cited in technical articles? Linked from guides that practitioners actually use?
Content that exists only on its own domain, however well-written, tends to carry less weight in generative retrieval than content that shows up across the places AI systems draw from.
It’s also worth keeping in mind that these systems aren’t uniform. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews have different architectures and likely weight sources differently. Optimising for one doesn’t guarantee visibility in the others.
Dimension 5: Metadata
In traditional SEO, metadata performs a direct and well-understood function. Page titles influence ranking; meta descriptions influence click-through rate; canonical tags prevent duplicate content penalties; structured data markup enables rich results in the SERP. These are established, technical interventions with measurable outcomes.
In a generative context, conventional metadata has limited direct influence on whether content gets cited. AI systems retrieving content to synthesise an answer are not reading meta descriptions before deciding whether a source is relevant. What functions as metadata in GEO is inline context, explicit statements within the body of the content that declare what a page covers, what product or software version it applies to, what question it is designed to answer, and what it does not cover.
Documentation that opens a section with a precise, declarative statement of scope gives AI systems the context needed to retrieve it accurately. Documentation that goes immediately into procedural steps without establishing what the section addresses and for whom is structurally harder to retrieve accurately, regardless of how well its technical metadata is configured.
This is one of the more intuitive dimensions of the SEO-to-GEO shift and also one of the more actionable ones: writing clear scope statements at the top of each section costs little effort and improves clarity for human readers at the same time.
Best practices for writing documentation that satisfies both SEO and GEO
At this point, the question being asked is, ‘What changes in how documentation is actually written?’
For a long time, those decisions were guided by the assumption that the reader would end up on your page and move through it from top to bottom.
That assumption no longer holds as strongly. Now, a section might be read on its own. A single paragraph might be pulled into an answer. A definition might appear somewhere else entirely, without the rest of the page around it.
And that changes how careful you have to be with what you write. The goal is not to write differently for the sake of it. It is to write in a way that still works, even when your content is no longer read the way you expected. A few practices make that possible:
1. Lead with the answer
Many documentation pages build gradually toward an answer. That structure falls apart when content is retrieved out of sequence. The fix is to state what something does, show the key step or command, then explain. The most important information should be the first thing a reader or an AI system encounters.
2. Treat each section as a complete unit
Documentation is often written as a continuous flow, where each section builds on the one before it. That works when someone reads a page from top to bottom. It breaks when a section is pulled out of that flow, which is exactly what generative retrieval does.
A useful check could be to ask, “If someone reads only this section, do they still understand it?” Phrases like “this process”, “the above configuration”, or “as described earlier” only make sense in sequence. In retrieval, that sequence is gone. Naming things explicitly and repeating key terms where needed keeps the meaning intact wherever the content ends up.
3. Write headings the way users think
Headings are often written based on how a system is designed, not how people actually ask questions. Small changes like framing headings as questions where it makes sense, and making the intent of each section clear from the heading alone, make a meaningful difference.
“How do I authenticate an API request?” retrieves more reliably than “API Authentication Methods” because it mirrors the language of the question, not just the name of the concept. It is one of the lowest-effort adjustments a documentation team can make for both channels at once.
4. Be specific and keep it current
Vague writing underperforms in both channels. “This process typically takes a few minutes” is not citable. “This process takes between two and five minutes, depending on payload size” is.
Specificity also comes with a responsibility. Outdated documentation used to mean a drop in rankings. Now it can mean incorrect answers being generated from your content and delivered to developers as fact. API behaviour, accepted parameter values, and version-specific details need to stay accurate and consistent across all related sections. The consequences of letting them go outdated are no longer limited to search performance.
5. Annotate code examples
A code block retrieved without context is difficult for a language model to interpret accurately. Well-annotated examples where the purpose of each significant step is stated clearly, either in inline comments or in the surrounding sentences, are far more retrievable and citable than uncommented blocks, for human readers and AI systems alike.
6. Build presence beyond your documentation site
Generative engines build authority signals from how content is discussed and referenced across the web in technical articles, community forums, tutorials, and developer guides. Documentation that exists only on its own domain, however well-written, carries weaker generative authority than content that is part of a wider conversation.
Being referenced in the places AI systems draw from is increasingly a prerequisite for generative discoverability, even if the precise mechanics vary by system.
Final thoughts
The move toward generative systems doesn’t mean documentation teams have to abandon everything they know about SEO. It means the expectations around how content is used have changed. Pages are no longer guaranteed to be read from top to bottom, or even visited at all. But the need for clear, accurate, well-structured documentation hasn’t gone anywhere. If anything, it matters more now.
What changes is how that clarity is delivered. Writing with structure, context, and direct answers in mind makes your content work in both environments. It helps users who land on your page, and it also makes it easier for AI systems to interpret and reuse your content correctly.
What matters is whether your content still holds up in different contexts, on the page, in search results, or inside an AI-generated answer.
